It is mid-January and here are some of the things people are talking about on Hilton Head Island.
SNOW, SNOW, SNOW!
It’s January 2018 and we’re going to have another Snow Day for locals as well as our vacation rental guests put on by The Island Rec Center at Shelter Cove Community Park on January 27 (11AM – 4PM). But Hilton Head Island vacationers and residents got to see real snow on January 3rd. It was an amazing experience for many, as kids and adults alike got to make snow angels and see the wintery stuff for the first time. Islanders made the best of it by using the Cross Island as their personal mountain. People snowboarded/sledded down using traditional snowboard as well as boogie boards (designed for the ocean but who has true sleds in the south – ha!) It was quite a treat to be on Hilton Head Island vacationing during the storm.
Did you know that Hilton Head got a present after Hurricane Irma blew through this September? Buoy 8 washed up on South Forest Beach and was a big hit this fall with locals and Hilton Head vacationers with many pictures being taken. When the US Coast Guard came to take it back in October there was lots of talk of trying to get it to stay put on Hilton Head. But alas the 13,000 pound buoy was taken back to Charleston.
The SERG Restaurant Group (owners of Skull Creek Boathouse, Frankie Bones etc.) stepped in and commissioned a 700 pound replica. It was delivered last week and sits between The Boathouse and their newest restaurant Skull Creek Dockside. So now Islanders and guests can get their pictures taken and we have another symbol of Hilton Head’s resilience.
This past week the Hilton Head Town Council passed the first single use plastic bag ban in the county. It most likely won’t be the last as Beaufort County and Bluffton have their votes in the pipeline as well. As of yet there are a lot of specifics other than it will start in about 8 months. We will let you know when we have further details.
There is always some thing happening and changing on Hilton Head and we will keep you posted about your favorite Island. Hope to see you soon!
