Beach and Waterways
First and foremost is the Atlantic Ocean, the beach and all the different waterways and lagoons. Known for wide open flat beaches this is a wonderful place for even the littlest of toddlers. With small waves and tons of beach at low tide there is a lot of room for building sandcastles and rarely is a tot knocked down by the waves.There is biking for miles on the beach as well – great place for the little ones to learn.

Each summer from approximately Memorial Weekend through Labor Day weekend Shelter Cove Harbourfest takes place in Shelter Cove Harbour. Monday – Friday enjoy arts & crafts, live entertainment including Cappy the Clown. Performer Shannon Tanner offers both family shows and adult shows each evening with the family show at 6:30 and 8:00 PM. A year round professional singer, Shannon Tanner performs a mixture of popular music, country, folk, standards, and great kid’s songs. There’s lots of audience interaction, and the little ones love to join Shannon on the steps of the scenic gazebo stage overlooking to waters of the harbor.
On Tuesday nights in the summer, Shelter Cove Harbour bursts alive with a Fireworks show at 9:00pm bringing a festival atmosphere to the entire marina. This has been a tradition of the marina for many years. Other ways to see the fireworks are a boat ride on the Vagabond Cruise, kayaking, or one of the other smaller boats at the marina.
Going just a bit north The Shelter Cove Community Park at Shelter Cove Towne Centre is the newest addition to Hilton Head. With a playground, stage for entertainment, bathrooms and amazing views of Broad Creek this is where many Island events take place. On Tuesdays Summer Jams coinciding with Harbour Fest Fireworks from 7-9pm enjoy bouncy houses and entertainment. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs for a great view of the fireworks.
If you want to enjoy some of the history of Hilton Head then be sure and take advantage of the oldest shopping area and the unofficial downtown of the Island. Nightly events at Coligny Plaza in the summer are fun filled for kids of all ages. A quick walk to the beach entrance at Coligny Beach Park has an interactive fountain that everyone, young and old will make you smile.
Sea Pines is a great place for kids as well as adults. You can spend a whole day of your vacation here with your family. Lawton Stables’ 23-acre equestrian facility offers escorted trail rides through the tranquil 600 acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Lawton Stables also has a small animal farm, which is free for everyone. Children seven and under are able to take pony rides around the small animal farm on one a Shetland ponies. The kid’s will be thrilled with Harley. Harley is an 18.2 hand Clydesdale horse (the kind you see in the Budweiser ads).
Head over to Harbour Town to one of the best playgrounds on Hilton Head – The Gregg Russell Playground, a great place for the kid’s to express their energy and enjoy the afternoon. If that hasn’t tired them out enough then head over to the Harbour Town Lighthouse and see the museum, climb the 114-steps of the lighthouse and when you reach the top, you can see the famous 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links, Daufuskie Island, Savannah and people enjoying a parasail as well as shop in the charming top of the lighthouse. Then in the summer evenings Sunday – Friday at 8pm take in Gregg Russell who has been entertaining generations of families for over 40 years, is a must see under the Liberty Oak with songs and stories.
Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Jet Ski’s and more
There are many tour operators on Hilton Head that can take you out for a guided dolphin watch in boats ranging from large double-deck boats to small craft like a kayak. In Hilton Head, the dolphins are as friendly as the people here. Dolphins are easy to spot so go to one of the 4 marinas to rent a kayak, paddle board, or jet ski to get out on the water.

An easy and relaxing family activity around Hilton Head rental condos is crabbing; kids will love to go crabbing… in South Carolina, you don’t need a license if you are crabbing with three or less drop nets, fold up traps or hand lines. Fishermen need a license to crab with a crab trap or pot. Equipment is minimal – a bucket, a crab net, a string with a chicken neck attached above a two-ounce sinker. A dock, pier, boat, or sea wall makes the best crabbing site, although you can do it from shore if there is no wave action.

The Sandbox is an Interactive Children’s Museum and Hilton Head Island’s only hands-on activity center for children. cater to children eight and under. There are many activities for the kids if it is a rainy day or the kid’s have too much sun from the day at the beach. The Loggerhead Sandcastle, filled with magical sand is fun for all ages. The Builders of Tomorrow Exhibit construction zone allows little ones to test their building skills. “The Adventure,” is where they can dress up as pirates. In the upstairs loft they can see themselves on TV wearing fun costumes, “play” doctor or veterinarian with real x-rays and life size animals; have fun with the puppet theater, Lego table and train table. There are even board games and puzzles for the older ones, or curl up in our comfy corner library where you and your child can read to each other.
